The challenge: Inspired by our natural tendency to drape clothes on the backs of chairs. I wanted to come up with a fun way to remedy that behavior and turn the narrative identity of a closet on its head.
Introducing… a chair made from steel closet rod and flexible plastic coat hangers. Recombining these pedestrian artifacts into something new. It’s a closet you can sit on, embodied in an artful object. This project was an Interior Design Best of Year Honoree in the Residential Accent Chair Category. It also bagged a Core77 Design Award Notable, Spark Silver Award, I.D. Design Distinction Award, and an IDEA Finalist nomination.
This vision of mine has had the luck and spunk to show up on the pages of Interior Design, Elle Decor, Design Boom, Yanko Design, Design Milk, Apartment Therapy, Inhabitat, Tree Hugger and Core77.

By bringing the elements of the closet into the foreground of a person’s daily routine, this chair offers a gentle encouragement to stay neat; no longer hidden from sight, the hangers remind you to hang up your coat. This chair can fit in your studio, home, boutique, hotel or gallery, letting your closet join the party.
The chair’s impermanent construction from standard plastic hangers (currently designed to fit the Container Store brand hanger dimensions) makes it easy for users to customize and change colors and patterns. Welded steel rings are what keep the hangers from sliding down the frame. The custom rings intentionally match the diameter of the tubular hangers so they nest together beautifully. You can also actually sit on this chair. It holds 170 lbs of my dynamic weight. The hangers’ flexible plastic makes it surprisingly comfortable. I like sitting on the chair to put on and take off my shoes.
